2. Description of the Prior Art
In the medical field it is common practice to store a fluid within a disposable package and to permit access to the fluid through a puncturable membrane or seal. The packages or containers thus formed are commonly referred to as vials.
Vials are conventionally used to store fluids which are utilized in medical procedures, such as blood and blood products, solutions and preparations, drugs, cytotoxins, anesthetics, cell culture media and other agents.
Vials have been used to store a variety of fluids and are a component in a large number of medical devices. The fluids may be a solid, liquid or gaseous and the medical devices include, but are not limited to, pumps, syringes, catheters, cell culture workstations, cell culture hoods, cultures, culture incubators, biohazard samplers, flow cytometers, cell sorters and other medical equipment.
